The town of Gyöngyös has undergone a spectacular transformation in recent years, particularly in terms of sports and community spaces. At the heart of urban development efforts has been the empty former military barracks which were waiting for their new potentials to be discovered. The development of the area was significantly boosted by the European Union’s support provided by the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme (TOP) “Rehabilitation of brownfield sites” call for proposals.
Thanks to the project implemented within the framework of the call, the rehabilitation of the village has enriched the city with new green-area-recreation, sports and leisure functions. This area, which was previously deserted, has now become a dynamic sports center of the city, making sports and recreation an integral part of the community’s life. As part of the project, a building in the area of the former barracks owned by the municipality, which is called the Active House, was renovated.
During the development, several important facilities were completed. The most important project was the construction of the Dr. Fejes András Sport and Events Hall, which quickly became the center of the city’s sport life. In addition to the exquisite hall, a warm-up hall was also built, as well as an artificial football pitch, which provides excellent opportunities for local sports clubs and amateur athletes.
In the building, offices of sports clubs were placed, thus ensuring a direct connection between the administrative background and sports. In addition, well-equipped gyms are available to meet all the needs of representatives of different sports. A variety of recreational and healthcare services are available in the Active House, including a sports clinic. These services are open not only to athletes but also to members of the local community, thereby contributing to the health-conscious lifestyle of the city.
One of the special features of the building is the exhibition showcasing the sporting history of the city. Through the rich collection of the exhibition, visitors can gain insight into the past and present of the local sports life, get to know the famous athletes and the most memorable sports events of the city. There is also a well-equipped conference room in the building, which is an ideal venue for various events, meetings and lectures. When designing the Active House, special attention was paid to allowing parents who accompany their children to train to spend their time comfortably. The buffet of the leisure center provides a pleasant environment for waiting and relaxing.
The rehabilitation of the former military barrack and the establishment of the new sports center was a significant step in the development of the city of Gyöngyös. The new facilities not only enrich the local sporting life, but also contribute to boosting community life. The modern and diverse sports and leisure center gives residents the opportunity to spend their free time actively and more healthy while enjoying the city’s rich sports culture.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-2.1.1-15-HE1-2016-00002 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
